Nadiah Bamadhaj – Ravaged

Richard Koh Fine Art (RKFA-KL) is pleased to announce Malaysian artist Nadiah Bamadhaj’s (b. 1968) solo exhibition in Malaysia. Ravaged is scheduled to run from 23 July – 13 Aug 2020 at Richard Koh Fine Art, 34-1, Jalan Telawi 2, Bangsar Baru, 59100 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The artist will present 8 works on paper from her new series that combines charcoal on paper collage drawings and digital images.

In Ravaged, Bamadhaj attempts to highlight specific and personalized plights within a marginalized community in Indonesia. Often adopting an ethnographic approach to her practice, Bamadhaj continues this methodology in Ravaged, and stories of humanity are revealed.  In this series, Bamadhaj re-visits a familiar protagonist from her work, the Medusa, which has been part of her practice since 2008. The Medusa is utilized as a symbol and expression of social injustice, and the gesture of superimposing her over the photographic prints (in which was sourced from the archives of an Indonesian photojournalist) serves as an artistic intervention, alluding to her as a social witness of trauma. As explained by Bamadhaj, “The Medusa element in this work is an expression of the anxiety of those I have portrayed in this series. The corresponding digital images allude to the stories of their lives, their hopes, fears, and yearnings.”
