Art Stage Singapore 2018

Richard Koh Fine Art (RKFA) is delighted to present new works by Thai Artist Kedsuda Loogthong alongside a group of presentation featuring Hasanul Isyraf Idris, Justin Lim, Minstrel Kuik, Nadiah Bamadhaj, Dhavinder Singh and Wong Perng Fey at Art Stage Singapore, Booth C1, Level 1, Marina Bay Sands Expo & Convention Centre, 1 Bayfront Avenue, 018971 Singapore. This presentation at ART STAGE Singapore 2018 aims to highlight a breadth of divergent practices of emerging and established artists, illustrating a broad range of conceptual focus and material concerns.

Four years since Kedsuda’s third solo feature, Mother is the artist’s means of digesting an incident which left her deeply affected. Through these ornate pieces, Kedsuda records her emotional journey of when she received news of her mother’s hospital admission for a complex heart condition. On top of the complex waves of emotions which overwhelmed her, these canvases record the beauty of kindness and compassion, the artist’s gratitute for the love and support experienced. Fascinated by the aesthetic elegance and language of lines, Mother is a gradual departure from Kedsuda’s earlier pieces which were first executed in 2015. Her earlier works surveyed the symbolism of lines through realistic renderings of scattered ribbons which provided identities for various occasions – morphing from a symbol of celebration and blessing to sympathy and grief extending to the capacity to convey authority and rank. The carefully constructed ribbons allowed Kedsuda to consider the transition in which these “identities” merge and evolve.

Through Mother, Kedsuda progresses from the symbolic use of ribbons toward the exploration of lines. Composed of an endless web of lines continuously overlapping, Kedsuda expands on the potential and qualities through their complex rhythm. These heightened and relaxed compositions adopt a variety of vibrant and muted palette. We follow Kedsuda’s deliberations through the overlaying of contrasting colors, varying depths and density as well as the bold deconstruction of these elements. These paintings record the tumultuous emotional roller coaster in which her experience has afforded. Woven to resemble blood cells, the complex meanderings through capillaries represent the dynamic flow of life. Perhaps seen as the artist’s attempt to penetrate through the domination of these capillaries, Mother captures Kedsuda’s cathartic experience and her journey to overcome.
