Liu Hsin-Ying mixed media paintings attempt to personify thinking, giving the cerebral exercise or thought, fluid mysterious forms. The young artist views thinking as a process that undergoes a perpetual metamorphosis, a continually boiling concoction consisting of fragments of sounds, images, words, sensations and memories. They are constantly reconstructed and rearranged. Viewing the act of painting as a form of wordless expression, she interprets the elements and the dynamism of thinking into loose paintings, overflowing with lyrical and sinuous lines, swatches of vivid colors and cryptic personal symbols, endowing ‘thought’ with a physical presence. Her works marriage the techniques of painting and drawing, incorporating traditional drawing materials such as crayon, pastel and charcoal with oil and acrylic. Though her visual language are sourced from within, she finds poetic inspiration from a variety of sources in the physical world, such as the vastness of the sea, the sounds of the wind, intergalactic objects such as stars and spheres, curves in nature and the idea of the whole and its individual parts.
