Richard Koh Fine Art (RKFA) is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition by Sun Xun in Malaysia scheduled to run from 24 July – 14 August 2018 at Richard Koh Fine Art, 229, Jalan Maarof, Bukit Bandaraya, Bangsar 59100, Kuala Lumpur. The exhibition will present an intimate display of watercolor drawings and stop motion animation films by the artist. The Opening Reception will take place on Tuesday, 24 July 2018, from 5 – 8pm.
Fresh off his first major solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Australia which features important animation works and a new piece of 40-metre-long painting on bark paper, Sun Xun continues to accomplish his list of firsts in Malaysia with a solo exhibition at Richard Koh Fine Art, Kuala Lumpur. This self-titled exhibition features an intimate display of luminous watercolor light boxes and stop-motion animations.
Recognised as one of China’s most talented rising young artist, Sun Xun’s practice combines the spirit of meticulous craftsmanship in traditional artistic expression with forward thinking. Sun works adeptly across diverse mediums to provide an immersive installation punctuated with exhuberant new energy for when reality and fantasy collides. One who’s intrinsic motivation is to expand the potentials of his choice medium, Sun masterly weaves traditional visual formats of drawing, painting and woodcut into sequences of digital stop-motion animation.
Born into an industrial mining town in northeast China during a period following the Chinese Cultural Revolution, Sun’s interest lies in the contrasting accounts of how historical events were experienced and remembered. His works, loaded with clues, echo 19th century symbolist attitudes to challenge and question received wisdom. Reality and fantasy, time and history, both are continuously seen in Sun Xun’s work.
Sun has held multiple solo exhibitions around the world, most notably at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; The Hayward Gallery, London; The Drawing Center, New York; the Kunsthaus Baselland, Basel; the A4 Contemporary Arts Centre, Chengdu; the Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai; and the Louis Vuitton Taipei Maison, Taipei. He has most recently exhibited his work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Shanghai Biennale, Shanghai; and The Vancouver Art Gallery, Vancouver. The artist’s works have been collected by international art museums and institutions include Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Asia Society, New York; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Hammer Museum, Los Angles; Hong Kong M+ Museum, Hong Kong; ARARIO Museum, Seoul; and among others.
His films have been screened at numerous festivals worldwide, including, the 25th Torino Film Festival, Torino; the 8th Seoul International Film Festival, Seoul; the 53rd International Short Film Festival, Oberhausen; and the MECAL International Short Film Festival, Barcelona.
