Natee Utarit and Nadiah Bamadhaj – Asia Now

Asian Now Installation (5)

Richard Koh Fine Art (RKFA) is pleased to present an exhibition of works by Natee Utarit and Nadiah Bamadhaj, at Booth B5, the ASIA NOW Paris Asian Art Fair, Paris, France from 20 to 22 October, 2015. ASIA NOW will be held at the Espace Pierre Cardin, Paris, France. These established artists will be exhibiting recent works which display the extent of their practices, showcasing the diverse range of artworks coming out of the vibrant Southeast Asian region.

Nadiah Bamadhaj will present recent works which sought inspiration from her current base in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Drawing from the shacks and dwellings inhabited by the migratory and disenfranchised communities of the city, the native Malaysian artist employs her signature charcoal on paper collage technique to assemble architectural constructions that are each simultaneously both a drawing and a sculpture; underlining the structures’ vulnerability in a critical observation on the relationship between architecture and power, and how it informs personal and national identities.

Natee Utarit will present recent oil paintings alluding to the traditional still life, emphasising his mastery in aesthetics and composition. Utarit’s distinct style further explores his use of symbolism and continued interest in sourcing inspiration from the past, stylizing his paintings using chiaroscuro effects to inject drama into his still lifes, contrasting it with his choice of contemporary subject matters. This deliberate contrast manifests the artist’s sardonic humour and reveals a commentary on modern aesthetics and the values deemed significant by today’s contemporary art world.
