Curated by James Luigi Tana, a fold in time unfolds as a visual dialogue across borders, media, and personal histories. Taking inspiration from the idiomatic expression “a fold in time”, the exhibition draws attention to the convergence of moments—past, present, and future—as embodied through artistic expression. The show speaks to the complexity of identities and the mobility of art and artists within the Southeast Asian region, echoing scholar Howard Morphy’s reflections on cultural continuity and crossing boundaries.
The exhibition features a diverse lineup of artists whose practices span painting, sculpture, intermedia, technology-based art, and mixed media installations. Ines Katamso and Issay Rodriguez explore the intersection of art and science, examining nature’s regenerative forces through microscopic and botanical imagery. Their works evoke themes of preservation and sustainability, resonating with the analog-digital hybridity in Jill Paz’s practice and the material experimentation in Eunice Sanchez’s intermedia works. Meanwhile, Luh’De Gita interrogates cultural commodification and preservation issues in Balinese identity through an aesthetic critique of tourism and representation.
Themes of identity, migration, and memory surface in the works of Rose Cameron and Kelly Maeshiro, whose abstracted forms express deeply personal narratives and the search for belonging. Painting serves as a core medium for artists Aimi Kaiya, Liu Hsin-Ying, and Wah Nu, who each employ distinct approaches to explore contemporary pictorial expression. Sculptural and material inquiries are further developed through Goldie Poblador’s glass works and Sinta Tantra’s bold mixed-media constructions, which channel architectural and formalistic investigations.
As a traveling exhibition, a fold in time challenges fixed cultural and geopolitical boundaries. It instead offers a shared platform for reflection and experimentation, enabling a circulation of ideas within and beyond the Southeast Asian art scene. With each iteration across the region, the exhibition expands its resonance, affirming the role of collaboration in shaping the evolving landscape of contemporary art.
