Minstrel Kuik – She who has no self

The Horsham Regional Art Gallery presents a major new photography exhibition by Minstrel Kuik, She who has no self.

With photography at the core of her practice, Kuik works across the disciplines of drawing, photo books, fabric assemblage and installation.

The universal themes of the self and belonging will be explored through a new work that gives the exhibition its title and an ongoing series which will be shown it its entirety for the first time in this exhibition.

Born in Malaysia of Chinese ancestry, Kuik lives and works a suburban neighbourhood on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur where negotiating the tensions of different ideologies and social bounds is an everyday occurrence. From the lens of contemporary life, Kuik’s work considers and questions the politics of place, family and cultural identity and how this intersects with personal experience.

Diary-like snapshots and carefully constructed images form a distinctive output from which Kuik works and reworks.

One of Malaysia’s most significant photographers, Kuik has exhibited in Singapore, France, America, Japan and China. This is her second solo exhibition in Australia.

Minstrel Kuik She who has no self curated by Alison Eggleton will be presented as part of PHOTO 2020 international festival of photography. This major new biennial will activate Melbourne and regional Victoria, with inspiring Australian and International photography practice.
