Richard Koh Fine Art Bangkok presents In Between, a solo exhibition by Thai artist Kanokpon Somchua, on view from 24 January to 7 March 2026. The exhibition brings together a new body of paintings that reflect on nature, stillness, and states of transition, inviting viewers into spaces that exist between perception and memory, movement and calm.
Rooted in close observation of the natural environment, Somchua’s practice approaches nature not as a static subject, but as a living presence shaped by rhythm, atmosphere, and continual change. Forests, flowing water, shifting light, and open skies serve as quiet points of departure through which inner awareness gradually emerges. These elements are not depicted descriptively; rather, they form subtle impressions that resonate on an emotional and sensory level.
The works in In Between explore moments of uncertainty and transition—spaces where forms appear to surface, dissolve, and reconfigure. This “in-between” condition reflects the threshold between reality and sensation, between humanity and nature, and between what is remembered and what remains indistinct. The paintings hold a sense of suspension, allowing viewers to encounter nature as something felt as much as seen.
Somchua’s creative process is guided by attentiveness and responsiveness rather than predetermined outcomes. Images unfold gradually through an intuitive engagement with material, gesture, and awareness. Within this process, negative space, rhythm, and residual marks play a central role, acting as points of connection between stillness and movement, control and release. The resulting compositions evoke quiet fluctuation, where calm and vitality coexist.
Born and raised in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Somchua’s connection to the landscapes of southern Thailand continues to shape his artistic language. His work reflects an ongoing contemplation of the natural world as a formative force—one that nurtures life, consciousness, and creative thought. Through In Between, Somchua invites viewers to slow down, to observe, and to dwell within moments that resist clear definition, yet remain deeply present.
Please note that RKFA bangkok will be closed for Chinese New Year from 15 -26 February 2026.
Born on September 16, 1996, in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand, KANOKPON SOMCHUA holds a master’s degree from the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture, and Graphic Arts at Silpakorn University. Raised in Baan Ton Riang, Sichon District, his deep connection to the land, forests, mountains, and light of his birthplace profoundly shapes both his life and artistic practice.
Viewing nature as a living source that molds consciousness rather than a mere resource, Somchua reflects on his identity through close observation and awareness of his surroundings. His work translates the rhythms, forms, and emotional resonance of forests and trees into visual expressions, exploring the intimate relationship between inner experience and the natural environment.
